Scientology - weird
Finally someone has applied some common sense to the idea of the Scientology cult. Even more amazingly it’s the French, a nation who have produced some of the greatest philosophers of all time.
Personally I believed the French may have been among the most susceptible to the charms of the travelling band of charlatans (who in America count Tom Cruise and John Travolta among their number – though there is no link to them in this legal case), but I was wrong.
They have ordered the church to pay fines after conning two former members out of massive amounts and must pay in total more than £500,000 in fines.
Unfortunately due to a legal loophole in France, French courts no longer have the authority to dissolve organisations found guilty of fraud so Scientology survives but come on,. it is all a bit crazy.
A sci-fi writer criticised formal religion and decides to show how easy it is to create a faith system.
He then very openly does this, and people still buy into it, even though it claims we were all dumped here without memories by aliens called Thetans and then tasked with reconnecting to or ancestors through the faith.
Add a host of frankly disturbing customs and ceremonies and voila! You have an international cult.
I am not personally a fan of religion, but I respect those that were created in less advanced times when we had no technology and people needed something to invest faith in.
They have developed over time and that is fair enough. But Scientology has no excuse and no place in a right-thinking world – in my opinion.
